Once every ten years, Canada plays host to the world’s oldest international men’s curling bonspiel, the “Strathcona Cup.” SASOW is pleased to provide a grant to this event. Now in its 120th year, the next Strathcona Cup will be competed for in January 2023. The Western Canadian group of five Scottish teams will visit Winnipeg on January 28 and 29, 2023. They will play games at the Fort Rouge, Granite, Pembina and Deer Lodge Curling Clubs.
This month-long curling bonspiel brings together 15 men’s curling teams from Scotland to play against our very own in curling centres from St. John’s, Newfoundland, to Victoria, British Columbia. The competition involves three distinct tours (Western, Central and Eastern Canadian tours). Twenty Scottish curlers will be on each tour.
With support from the Royal Caledonia Curling Club and Curling Canada, the event is managed and operated by curlers who were fortunate enough to participate in the 2018 competition that traversed the country of Scotland. The Chair of the 2023 tour is the former Curling Canada Board Chair, John Shea.
The 2023 Strathcona Cup tour (Western Tour) will begin in Vancouver on January 1, 2023, and pass-through Vancouver Island, Kelowna, Vernon, Edmonton, Sylvan Lake, Red Deer, Banff, Lake Louise, Calgary, Saskatoon, Winnipeg and Thunder Bay before hosting the final closing event for all 60 Scottish curlers in Ottawa, February 3, 2023.
