Pop-Up Piper

"Freedom and Perseverance" serves as the enduring motto of the St. Andrew's Society of Winnipeg. This sentiment held strong as we braved the rainy weather to celebrate Canada's 157th birthday at Vimy Ridge Park near the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada monument at 1:00 p.m.

"It's fitting to pay tribute to the nation's recognition on the global stage, which was marked by the historic battle of Vimy Ridge, said Peter Heavysege, SASOW President.

Our special Pop-Up Piper for the day was the talented 18-year-old Hartley Eldridge from the Lord Selkirk Robert Fraser Memorial Pipe Band. The tune Hartley is playing is St. Ninian's Parish Centre Ceilidh.

On the 80th anniversary of the decisive D-Day, the St. Andrew’s Society of Winnipeg has chosen to honour the bravery and sacrifice of those who fought on the beaches of Normandy with a special Pop-Up Piper performance.

To commemorate this solemn occasion, 18-year-old Ethan Blain, Pipe Major of the Lord Selkirk Robert Fraser Memorial Pipe Band, will deliver a poignant performance on June 6th at 12 Noon, in front of the Cenotaph on Memorial Blvd.

In celebration of Manitoba Day on May 12, the St. Andrew's Society of Winnipeg arranged a Pop-Up Piper (PUP) to play at the Louis Riel Statue in front of the Manitoba Legislative Building. Max Seney was the Society's PUP at this event, a Grade 12 student at Nelson McIntyre Collegiate and a Lord Selkirk Robert Fraser Memorial Pipe Band member.

The POP-UP PIPER IS POPPING UP AGAIN THIS SUMMER

Many of you have heard of, or perhaps even heard, the St. Andrew's Society of Winnipeg Pop-up-Piper.  Last summer, the Society began an ambitious program to increase awareness of the Society by having very talented young pipers perform at various locales. The mini-concerts, sincerely appreciated by all in attendance, also raised the profile of the SASOW with coverage on local television, radio stations and  city newspapers.

From government buildings, cemeteries, historic forts, art galleries, cairns reminding us all of the battles won and sacrifices made to beautiful parks and even locales outside of Winnipeg, the Pop-up-Piper seemed to be everywhere.

The venture was such a resounding success many people must have thought that the SASOW was the only cultural organization in the city.

Building on last year's success….the SASOW will launch our Pop-up-Piper program in 2021 as soon as the COVID restrictions are appropriate to gatherings in public.

Many more dates and locales are being considered for the remaining 2021 Pop-up-Piper schedule. These will be sent out to our members as the dates and times are confirmed.

We are always looking for venue ideas so if you have any ideas you'd like to share – please email me at: dwightmacaulay111@gmail.com.

( * If you plan to attend any of the Pop-up-Piper performances, please respect and honour all social distancing and health guidelines.

It is our hope that in some small way we are helping to carry on a message of remembrance and gratitude – to ensure that Canadians never, ever, forget!”
